چکیده
Marsh birds are highly elusive and select wetland habitats that difficult to navigate, as well easily damaged by human observers. Autonomous recording units (ARUs) have been used determine presence or absence of marsh bird species, but little is known about distance effects on detection probability. Therefore, our objectives were 1.) evaluate if ARUs can be accurately count three species (e.g., Clapper Rail, Least Bittern, Seaside Sparrow), 2.) estimate probability curves based ARU recordings, 3.) the area surveyed for species. We arranged record calls from broadcasted Bluetooth speakers at fixed distances. replicated natural calling scenarios playing in different number combinations individuals, ranging 1 10 birds. To reduce interference real vocalizations, we conducted experiment a recently burned pine savanna habitat had similar herbaceous vegetation structure coastal emergent preferred these southern Mississippi. Raven Pro bioacoustics software produce sonogram images individuals each recording. Detection was calculated program R. Results showed may useful counting close distances some (< 100m), most counts biased low. In Rails Bitterns, accuracy decreased between 100 125 meters closer (50-100 meters) Sparrows. There also significant decline with increasing chorus size. With further study advancing technology, able supplement surveys limit logistical issues.

Groundwater nitrogen processing was examined in a restored black needlerush (Juncus roemerianus) marsh to assess its potential for removing land-derived nitrogen pollution. Two restoration designs, one initially planted at 50% cover (half density plots) and the other one at 100% cover (full density plots), were compared with non-vegetated controls. The introduction via groundwater of a NO3(-) s...

The present review summarizes the literature on the effects of oil spill on the U.S. Gulf of Mexico coastal vegetation including freshwater-, brackish-, and salt-marshes. When in contact with plant tissues, oil may have adverse impacts via physical and chemical effects. Oil may also become detrimental to plants by covering soil surfaces, leading to root oxygen stress and/or penetrate into the s...
متن کاملHolocene Climate and Climate Variability of the Northern Gulf of Mexico and Adjacent Northern Gulf Coast: A Review
Marine records from the northern Gulf of Mexico indicate that significant multidecadaland century-scale variability was common during the Holocene. Mean annual sea-surface temperature (SST) during the last 1,400 years may have varied by 3C, and excursions to cold SST coincide with reductions in solar output. Broad trends in Holocene terrestrial climate and environmental change along the eastern...
